Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international, independent, medical humanitarian organisation that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, healthcare exclusion and natural disasters. MSF combines the provision of emergency medical care with a commitment to speaking out about the suffering people endure and the obstacles encountered in providing assistance. MSF offers assistance to people based only on need and irrespective of race, religion, gender or political affiliation.
MSF has worked in India since 1999 and provides medical treatment to hundreds of thousands of patients, in remote areas in states including Bihar, Manipur, Assam, Jammu & Kashmir, Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh and Nagaland with the full cooperation and appreciation of the Ministry of Home Affairs, state and district authorities. MSF has also assisted victims of emergencies during the Gujarat earthquake, the Orissa cyclone, the Tsunami, the Kashmir earthquake, the Bihar floods and the West Bengal cyclone.
In 2010, MSF treated more than 400,000 patients. MSF also assisted victims of emergencies during the outbreak of acute watery diarrhea in south Chhattisgarh and malaria outbreak in Mumbai. MSF teams provided support to the population affected by cyclone Laila in Andhra Pradesh and the flash floods in Leh.
